What is the oxidation state of [v(co) 6]-1?
The electronic configuration of Vanadium is [Ar]3d3 4s2 (atomic no of 23 )
# In the complex V(CO)6 , Vanadium hexacarbonyl , Vanadium has 5 valence electrons.
# Whereas the neutral CO ligand contributes 2 electron each
So Effective atomic number(EAN) becomes
EAN = [5 +(2×6)] = 17
So the charge required to make V(CO)6 an 18 electron compound is -1. Then Vanadium will contain -1 charge and the overall complex will be [V(CO)6]^-1 i.e a monoanionic species

1)It should be noted that V(CO)6 is an exception of 18 electron rule. Another exceptions are Mn(CO)5 or [Fe(C5H5)2]+ .
2 ) The complex [V(CO)6] has low boiling point of 50°C which can be easily reduced to the monoanionic species.
