What is the purpose of an inert solvent?
We need to consider the usage of the word “inert” here. Generally a chemical (solvent) is considered inert when it does not undergo any chemical reaction with a specified other chemical. For example, pentane is inert to reacting with sulfuric acid, but is not inert in consideration of its reactivity towards chlorine gas.
Most organic chemistry reactions are carried out in specified solvents. It should be obvious that we want the reagents to react with each other, and not with the solvent. Solvents are usually used to control the rate of reactions and to absorb any heat released, in addition to other factors. If the solvent reacts, this complicated our reaction planning.
