What is the reaction of CuO and H2SO4?

CuO + H2SO4 → CuSO4 + H2O

This is an example of Double-displacement reaction. Water and Copper sulfate are the products.

CuO (Cupric Oxide) + H2SO4 (Sulfuric Acid) = CuSO4 (Cupric Sulphate) + H2O (Water)

Reaction of Zn with H2SO4 depends on concentration of acid.

  • For dilute acid, zinc sulphate and hydrogen gas at produced.

Zn + H2 SO4 → ZnSO4 + H2

  • For concentrated sulphuric acid, zinc sulphate , Sulphur dioxide and water are produced.

Zn + conc. 2 H2SO4→ ZnSO4 + SO2 + 2 H2O

** Concentrated sulphuric acid on reaction with metals produce salt, water and the product of reduction of sulphur.

CuO + 2 H3O(+) + SO4(2-) → Cu(2+) + SO4(2-) + 3 H2O

You can drop the 2 ‘waters’ as well:

CuO + 2 H(+) + SO4(2-) → Cu(2+) + SO4(2-) + H2O

It is a simple reaction if we react copper oxide with sulphuric acid then the product is coppersulphate and water.

CuO+H2SO4=uSO4+H2O

Simply, metals are oxidized by conc. H2SO4, but in your question, there is already oxide of copper is given, so reaction of above question is given below:

CuO + Conc. H2SO4 → CuSO4 + H2O

Note: Noble metals like gold and platinum do not react with conc. H2SO4

Reaction won't occur as Cu is less reactive than Hydrogen (check electrochemical sereis) therefore, Cu fails to displace Hydrogen to form CuSO4 and no reaction will occur.

The reaction of CuO anf H2SO4 is a neutralization reaction because CuO is a basic oxide and H2SO4 is an acid. In addition the products of the reaction are H2O and CuSO4 (water and salt respectively)

CuO + H2SO4 = CuSO4 + H2O(l)

Change in Free Energy: ΔG(20C) = -79.9kJ (negative, so the reaction runs)

Change in Enthalpy: ΔH(20C) = -85.9kJ (negative, so the reaction is exothermic)

This is a double displacement, exothermic reaction.
