What is the reaction of NaOH + H3BO3?

This a double replacement reaction between Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and Boric acid (H3BO3).

This reaction will yield into Sodium borate and water as described by the chemical equation below.

H3BO3 + 3 NaOH = 3 H2O + Na3BO3

It depends if you just want to get the stoichiometry or are trying to explain the detailed reactions in titration or a buffer. It is a very weak acid indeed (neutral to methyl orange). However, it is not really H3BO3 but has a much more complex aqueous chemistry, better given as B(OH)3 . (Now do you see why it is unimpressive as an acid?)

It can act as a Bronsted Acid like this:

B(OH)3 + H2O = B(OH)4- + H+

However, its tendency to form complexes makes the following more representative:

4B(OH)3 = B4O7 (2-) + 2 H+

Thus for practical purposes titration purposes, you can use the following:

4B(OH)3 + 2NaOH = Na2B4O7 + 7H2O

so the neutralization is 2 formula weights of H3BO3 to one of NaOH.

It is generally titrated with phenolphthalein in the presence of mannitol which serves to deal with the complex polymeric borates which actually occur in solution and make the boric acid effectively more acid, and thus give a decent titration curve.

There are many complex boron species (like the first two equations) which are in equilibrium. Starting with boric acid and adding OH- shifts the equilibrium amongst them. However the overall effect is like with the weak acid acetic acid, which is only partially ionized. Adding OH- to this removes the limited amount of H+ and more ionizes so that the pH does not change much, an effect known as buffering.

If you do not have mannitol (or another diol), then mixtures of boric acid and sodium hydroxide will also act as buffers. Thus the pH will change only slowly with the addition of more NaOH and it is difficult to see an endpoint. Buffers of this type are used in some biochemical applications.
