What is the redox reaction of potassium permanganate and sodium?

Potassium permanganate is a strong oxidizing agent, so we get:

2Na + KMnO4 + 0.5H2O = Na2O + KOH + MnO2 + 0.25O2(g)

ΔG(20C) = -365.4kJ, ΔH(20C) = -379.6kJ, so reaction is spontaneous and highly exothermic

Assume the permanganate is acidified.

Remember the half equation of reduction of permanganate:

[math]MnO_4^-+8H^+ +5e^- ightarrow Mn^{2+} + 4H_2O[/math]

And the oxidation of sodium:

[math]Naightarrow Na^+ + e^-[/math]

In order to cancel out the electrons, multiply the second by 5 and add into the first:

[math]5Na +MnO4^- + 8H^+ ightarrow 5Na^+ + Mn^{2+} + 4H_2O[/math]

You might want to add back the potassium ion on both sides.
