Just a little more information to add to the prior two answers. As one points out, formic acid is more properly known as methanoic acid. Ammonia, NH3, is a weak base. When they react, a proton (H+) is transferred from the acid to the base. So, HCOOH → HCOO– + H+, and the NH3 + H+ → NH4+. HCOO– is called methanoate (or formate), and NH4+ is ammonium. Together they form the salt NH4HCOO, ammonium methanoate (ammonium formate).
