What kind of reaction occurs when an alkene decolourises bromine in tetrachloromethane in the presence of sunlight?
Alkene +Br2 ->dibromoalkane .This reaction follows anti addition mechanism(i.e it is steriospecific).three membered cyclic halonium ion is intermediate.

Electrophilic addition reaction. In case of addition of Br2/ CCl4, initially there is formation of cyclic bromonium ion which gets opened up by the bromide ion in an SN2 fashion to give anti product. Overall addition is an anti addition of Br2.
For example :
Cis-2-butene on addition of Br2 in CCl4 gives racemic mixture whereas Trans-2-butene gives a meso compound.
