What precautions must be taken when using concentrated acids?

Whenever you are working with a dangerous chemical, your thought process should be in this order:

  1. Area. Is the area I’m working in safe? Does it have the proper ventilation? Are the materials/equipment I’m working with correct for that chemical? Are any other chemicals that would react with the chemical in the area?
  2. PPE (Personal Protective Equipment): Am I wearing appropriate clothing? Eye protection? The proper type of gloves (there are different types for different classes of chemicals)? Is a facemask or resparator required?
  3. First Aid: Do I know what to do in case of exposure? Are special neutralizing agents needed? Can I get to a wash area and eyewash stations in a hurry?
  4. Containment: If there is a spill or accident, will it be contained? Am I sure that other chemicals or experiments will not be contaminated or react with the spill?

For Hydrochloric Acid, the answers are:

  1. Work in a hood or lab area with strong ventilation. Use only glass or approved plastic containers. Keep all other chemicals out of the immediate area.
  2. Full clothing is required. No open toed shoes, long pants, lab coat, lab gloves (either latex or nitrile are appropriate), and lab goggles. If working with large quantities, a faceshield may be appropriate.
  3. In case of exposure to skin, flush with plenty of water for 15 minutes. In case of eye exposure, get to an eyewash station and flush the eye with water for AT LEAST 15 minutes. If fumes are inhaled, leave the area immediately and contact medical services if breathing troubles continue.
  4. The should be no other chemicals in the area. Work only on lab benchtops or hood surfaces. If a significant spill occurs, neutralize with bicarbonate and wash the area multiple times with water.

It seems like a lot, but after some practice, answering the 4 questions becomes second nature, and you do it automatically. Stay safe!

It depends on the type and concentration of acid. You should always use the PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) recommended on the MSDS or as they seem to be calling them now the SDS ( Safety Data Sheet).

For concentrated liquid acids this would generally be at least eye protection. However not all concentrated acids are dangerous even in pure form.

For example one could handle some acids such as Citric Acid in pure form with virtually no danger. The SDS might still recommend eye protection but that would be about it I would suspect.

Mineral acids are generally stronger than carboxylic acids. Concentrated Hydrochloric (HCl) or Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4) are much more dangerous. Liquid HCl is actually a solution of Hydrogen Chloride gas in water. Pure HCl is a gas. Water can only hold about 30% HCl at room temperature. HCl gas is extremely dangerous. It is considered to be a hygroscopic chemical. This means it is attracted to water and generally anything containing water. This includes bodily fluids such as mucus and ocular fluid. This is partly what makes it dangerous. If HCl gas contacts these fluids it turns into HCl solution ( so if it contacts your eyes as a gas it turns into liquid HCl in your eye, if it is inhaled it does the same thing in your lungs). In very brief, low concentrations this is not extremely dangerous but it will result in a rapid feeling of burning in your eyes and lungs and other exposed tissue, more so in tissues with higher concentrations of liquid. It will cause your eyes to tear and you to cough. This is still unpleasant even in cases of very low exposure. In higher concentrations and/or periods of exposure it can lead to almost instantaneous life threatening effects. Primarily due to its effects on the lungs. The body tries to neutralize the acid when it forms which is done by increasing fluid to the affected areas. when this happens in your lungs it can in the short term lead to rapid fluid accumulation and essentially you can drown from the fluid accumulation in your lungs. After the initial exposure however there is also damage caused to the exposed tissues leading to lung damage with more prolonged health concerns. The reason this is important to consider is that even fairly dilute solutions can give off pure HCl gas in certain conditions. Concentrated solutions can give off large amounts of HCl gas very rapidly. For example one can purchase HCl solution in the form of muriatic acid. In the USA this is often around 28% HCl. When you open the container it is generally possible to see what looks like fog forming in the air. That fog is due to the evaporating HCl. If you inhale the fog you are inhaling concentrated HCl. This will have the effects mentioned above. This effect is generally increased with ambient temperature but will even happen when it is cold. This is why in labs concentrated HCl is generally only used in a fume hood which removes any dangerous gases. If a fume hood is not available it would probably be recommended to wear an appropriate form of breathing protection. This would be either a respirator which is made to remove the chemical being used from the air or a self contained breathing mask which uses compressed air similar to a SCUBA tank. However the gas can also have effects on the skin which while usually not as severe can be very significant as well.

In the case of commercial muriatic acid or ANY COMMERCIAL CHEMICAL OR PRODUCT (ESPECIALLY PESTICIDES) the best method (and often the only legal method )for its use is to ALWAYS READ THE LABEL AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PRODUCTS USE. It would also be advisable to look up the MSDS or SDS which can generally be found freely online for virtually ANY CHEMICAL OR commercial chemical product. You just search for the product or chemical name AND SDS and or MSDS. This will not necessarily always provide you with explanations but should contain the information on PPE which is what the safety equipment is known as. This is especially important as some concentrated acids such as Sulfuric and Nitric Acid are incompatible with certain materials such as plastics and rubbers or cotton etc. These are oxidising acids which are even more dangerous than HCl. If you spill concentrated Sulfuric Acid on your skin it will start burning almost immediately. Due to its effect as an oxidiser it has a similar effect as fire would. It will burn right through cotton fabric such as denim, it might actually be more dangerous to wear cotton when working with such chemicals as the cotton will absorb the acid and hold it in contact with the wearers skin, though if the acid were only splashed on in small amounts it might provide a few seconds of time to immediately remove the item of clothing and rinse the exposed skin in cool water with soap or as recommended in the MSDS. If you get an oxidising acid in your eye you must IMMEDIATELY wash it out under cool running water, preferably for at least 15 minutes. You should however ALWAYS wear eye protection when working with such concentrated acids. It should also be fully enclosed eye protection such as goggles not regular safety glasses as splashes of such chemicals can and often do somehow manage to splash in exactly the place where regular glasses do not cover.
