What substance is produced when sulphuric acid reacts with both magnesium oxide and magnesium carbonate?

MgO(s) + H2SO4(aq) = MgSO4 (s) + H2O (l)

MgCO3(s) + H2SO4(aq) = MgSO4(s) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)

Magnesium sulphate. Water is also a correct answer.

H2SO4 + MgO -> MgSO4 + H2O.

H2SO4 + MgCO3 -> MgSO4 + H2O + CO2.

Dihydrogen gas, and magnesium sulfate are evolved…as is typical, active metal, plus acid, gives a salt and dihydrogen gas…

[math]Mg(s) + H_{2}SO_{4}(aq) longrightarrow MgSO_{4}(aq) + H_{2}(g)uparrow[/math]

MgO is a basic oxide and it reacts with sulphuric acid to form salt and water.MgO+H2SO4—->MgSO4+H2O.MgCO3 is a carbonate base which reacts with sulphuric acid to form salt and water with evolution of CO2 gas.MgCO3+H2SO4—->MgSO4+H2O+CO2.The second reaction gives effervescence due to liberation of CO2 gas which is a test for carbonate salt.

What happens when you mix sulphuric acid and the element magnesium with each other?

When the acid is added to the magnesium, there is a lot of fizzing as the acid dissolves the metal and hydrogen gas is released. The magnesium goes into solution and can be recovered in the form of magnesium sulphate (Epsom Salts).

Mg + H2SO4 -> MgSO4 + H2

For safety, only use small quantities of the acid, and wear suitable eye protection (goggles).

2 Mg(s) + H2SO4(aq) → Mg2SO4(aq) + H2(g)

note the key here is DILUTE sulphuric acid to yield the weak redox products. Concentrated sulfuric acid and magnesium metal would produce a much stronger redox reaction.

The following is the word equation for the reaction between magnesium and sulfuric acid:

Magnesium + sulfuric acid → magnesium sulfate + hydrogen gas

The balanced chemical equation:

Mg(s) + H2SO4(aq) → MgSO4(aq) + H2(g)

The bubbling of hydrogen gas is a dead giveaway that a chemical reaction is occurring when magnesium metal is combined with any acid, including sulfuric acid.

Mg(s) + H2SO4(aq) → MgSO4(aq) + H2(g)

An acid + a metal oxide → salt + water.

Therefore, sulphuric acid and magnesium oxide will react with each other to yield magnesium sulphate and water.

[math]H_2SO_4 + MgO ightarrow MgSO_4 + H_2O[/math]

How are crystals of magnesium sulphate made using magnesium oxide powder and sulphuric acid as reactants?

MgO dissolves in water to make Mg(OH)₂, which reacts with H₂SO₄ to make MgSO₄ and H₂O.
Evaporate the water and you get MgSO₄ crystals.

The reaction is the following:

MgCO3 + H2SO4————————→ MgSO4 + CO2 + H2O

You will see evolution of carbon dioxide. It is an exothermic reaction.
