What would happen if I was to mix hydrochloric acid with chloric acid?

Cooking Secrets  Follow

Hydrochloric acid can be oxidised by very strong oxidising agents such as chloric acid liberating chlorine gas.

The formulae of hydrochloric acid and chloric acids are HCl and HClO3 respectively. Out of them,inHCl the oxidation no.of chlorine is -1 and in HClO3 the oxidation no.of Cl is +5, so chloric acid is strong oxidizing agent than hydrochloric acid. Therefore, when hydrochloric acid is mixed with chloric acid, then hydrochloric acid is oxidized with strong oxidizing agent chloric acid and liberated chlorine gas.

The reaction can be written as follows :

5HCl + HClO3 = 3H2O+ 3Cl2
