Which one is a stronger base, tert-butoxide or hydroxide?
Tertiary butoxide is stronger base than hydroxide. We know, methyl group has electron donating inductive effect(+I). In tert-butoxide three methyl groups push the electron density towards the oxygen atom through sigma bonds thereby enhance the electron density on oxygen atom, which is responsible for its higher basicity. There is no such electron donating factor in hydroxide ion, only difference of electronegativity between hydrogen and oxygen puts some electron density on oxygen. So, it is also a strong base, but weaker than tert- butoxide.

LET ME TELL YOU THAT NOT ALL ALCOHOLS ARE WEAK ACID THAN WATER.
CH3OH IS THE EXCEPTION. [by experimental data of pKa value]
acidic st. order= CH3OH>H2O>ROH
as we know stronger the acid weaker will be the conjugate base.
HENCE BASIC ST. ORDER = CH3O-
therefore,METHOXIDE ION IS WEAKER BASE THAN HYDROXIDE ION
