Which solution is more concentrated, 1M (molarity) or 1m (molality)?

  • Many experts have given answers for this. In their opinion Molar Solution (M) will be slightly more concentrated than molal (m) Solution. Since they have taken water as solvent the answer is perfectly correct. But if you consider organic solvents such as
  • Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)
  • Chloroform (CHCl3) ,
  • then their densities are 1.59 and 1.49 respectively. If we prepare a solution of Benzoic acid in these solvents then the Molality (m) will be more than the Molarity (M). Because in MOLAL Solution you are going to dissolve the 1 mole.wt of the Solute in 1000 Grams of the solvent!!!.
  • In the case of CCl4 being used as solvent, we will dissolve 1 mole.wt of Solute (1000/1.59=) in 629 ml.of the solvent to make 1 m Solution . In such a case the MOLAL Solution will be definitely more stronger.
  • In the same way if Benzene is used as a solvent, the density of Benzene being 0.876, to prepare a 1 m Solution, 1 mole.wt of the Solute will be dissolved in (1000/0.876) =1142 ml.of Benzene to get the 1m Solution. In such a case, the Molality (m) will be definitely less stronger.
  1. So in short when water is used as a solvent, the Molarity (M) and Molality (m) will not be of much difference, with Molarity having a slight edge of more Concentration.
  2. When we use solvents more denser than water, then the molal (m) Solution will be more stronger than the Molar(M) Solution.
  3. In case when we use solvents less denser than water, then MOLAL (m) Solution will be less stronger than Molar (M) Solution.

A 1 molar solution is a solution in which 1 mole of a compound is dissolved in a total volume of 1 litre.

Molality, also called molalconcentration, is a measure of the concentration of a solute in a solutionin terms of amount of substance in a specified amount of mass of the solvent.

1 molar aqueous solution is more concentrated than 1 molal aqueous solution .

1 molar solution contain 1 mole of solute in 1 litre of the solution which include both solute and solvent.

So, the mass of solvent (i.e. water) is less than 1000 gram. Therefore 1 molar aqueous solution contains 1 mole of solute in less than 1000 gram of solvent .

Whereas 1 molal solution has 1 mole of solute in 1000 gram of solvent.

Hence concentration will be more in 1 molar aqueous solution.

Hope this helps. If it is still a doubt you can ask.
