substances consisting entirely of single bonded carbon and hydrogen atom and lacking functional group called alkanes.

simple example of alkane is methane.with molecular formula CH4 the c is the central atom and makes four single bonds to hydrogen.

these are three basic types of structures that classify the alkanes

(1)straight chain alkanes

(2)branched and

(3)cycloalkanes

straight chain alkanes:-the c is the central atom and makes four single covalent bonds to hydrogen atom.these alkanes are called straight chain alkanes because the c atom are connected in one continues chain with no branches.

straight chain compounds are less stable than branched compounds.because,the straight chain compounds had the highest heat of combustion and high energy

the straight chain alkanes general formula is CnH2n+2

The stability of cyclic compounds depends a lot on ring size: see ring strain.

As for straight-chain versus branched, the branched compounds are typically slightly lower in energy and thus by that definition more stable. But branching sometimes introduces tertiary hydrogen sites which are more reactive in certain reactions, such as free-radical halogenation.
