Why are alkyl halides insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvent?
Generally, Organic compounds are Insoluble in water but Alkyl Halides are Soluble because of the Halides(halogen) substituents. But the Alkyl part is hydrophobic (non polar). Alkyl Halides are very slightly Soluble in water. This is because the Interaction of Haloalkanes with water Molecules is not as strong as the interaction among water Molecules. When Alkyl Halides dissolve in water the energy released is not sufficient to overcome the attraction of Alkyl Halides and breaking of the Hydrogen bonding between water Molecules. Thus,Alkyl Halides are Insoluble in water. Water molecules have intermolecular hydrogen bonding and make it polar solvent. In case of organic solvents, no such bonds are present, thus solubility of alkane in organic solvents is higher.
