Why are demons afraid of salt?

Daniel Candler  Follow

Salt burns them. It’s not so much fear, as the desire to avoid something that’s unpleasant.

Coo! This is a new one on me. Prob'ly cos it's bad for the heart they don't have. Or mayhap it's the sodium or the chlorine. But l honestly reckon that demons ain't real which kinda invalidates the stupid question. And it is very stupid. I now dub thee 'The Pillock of Salt' - a worthy title…worthily won. Behold! The Pillock!

Demons are just a fairy tale imaginary beings.

As for the source of that particular part of myth… I suspect it has arisen from associating demons with “bad”, with decay, and salt was used as a preservative for millennia. Salt fight decay thus it fights “demons”.

Salt has been used in many religions and traditions as, both a purifier, and a repellent of evil. It isn’t necessarily used to scare demons, but it is used to contain them in a boundary, which is often a circle. In many forms of ritual magic, a boundary is formed to contain energy. Ritual magicians believe that the boundary they construct will create a measure of protection between the magician and what they summon. Circles are either marked on the ground, or marked mentally. The style of the circle itself depends on the tradition of the magician. Some mark out a circle in chalk, salt, cord, and other things.

It is a holy element !

You are part of the fabric of GOD and his creation and born from the Earth and Sea!

In fact when you cut yourself you can still taste the salt of the Ocean all the way back From those primordial times even to this day!

And don’t forget that the priest will mix water of which you are about 95%! of - WITH SALT - And bless both the water and the salt before THE EXORCISM !

Demons are like slugs. If you pour salt on them, they will melt. LOL! Someone has been pulling your leg. Salt has no effect on spiritual beings.

They are not. As far as I’m aware, physical material is irrelevant to spirits of all kind. They don’t care at all about what something is made of.

A quick survey of salt and why it was considered efficacious vs supernatural beings indicates that in many religions it is considered purifying.

In Greece, salt and flour were sprinkled over animal sacrifices; apparently salt can be consecrated just as water can be blessed to be holy water.

Buddhist persons frequently toss salt over their shoulder when entering a home, to keep demons and other supernatural beings from entering with or behind them.

Also seems to have been important in the Hebrew Covenant with God: “And every offering of your grain offering you shall season with salt; you shall not allow the Salt of the Covenant of your God to be lacking from your grain offering. With all your offerings you shall offer salt.”

Leviticus 2:13

Thus if it’s important and rare enough to be necessary in the sacrifices to the Hebrew God, probably pretty inimical to the demon population.

Probably also explains why in many cultures one tosses a pinch of salt over one’s shoulder when one spills the condiment. For a long time, salt was a very expensive and precious commodity; which may explain getting linked with purifying situations and ritual.

And, of course, Supernatural the TV series popularized the concept of using salt as a protection against many supernatural creatures including demons and ghosts. Thus the “litany” of Dig, Salt and Burn for disposing of ghosts.

Back in the day and I mean way back, salt was used to destroy fruits and vegetables because once the ground was covered with salt nothing would grow. So the people thought that the devil was being used to destroy their crops. So today if you spill the salt your suppose to throw some over your shoulder, blinding the devil who’s sneaking up on you to destroy your fields.
