Why is cooking an egg a chemical change?

Chemical changes result in the formation of new substances, and the changes that occur cannot be reversed (at least without other chemical changes). The heat from frying an egg causes the egg's protein to change permanently in texture and in appearance through a process called denaturing. The liquid becomes a solid, and the "white" of the egg goes from being basically clear to being literally white. The fried egg's properties are different from those of the raw egg. These changes cannot be undone. Browning also takes place, another indication of a chemical change.

The heat from cooking denatures the proteins in the egg so the structure of the proteins is changed.

All cooking is a chemical change. Any time raw food is treated to heat and or other substances ( liquid , sugar, fat etc) the resulting ‘cooking’ is a chemical reaction. The science of it is available in varying detail all over the net but that's about the gist of it.

Cooking an egg, like cooking many other foods requires changes in the food itself.
In the case of the egg, the proteins which make the egg are cross-linked to become solid. The albumin (white) is the first to solidify, followed by the yolk. The resulting protein is diffrenet from the original, as new chemical bonds are created.

Frying an egg is a chemical change because

  1. New substance is formed.
  2. The cooked egg has different chemical properties than the raw egg.
  3. It.cannot be reversed by simple.physical means.

Cooking an egg dentures the proteins caused by heating the proteins this changing the structures in appearance, taste and looks. Heat causes chemical changes that result in the formation of new substances that cannot be reversed, only further changed by chemical reactions!

It is a chemical change as once cooked, it cannot return to it’s original state! A physical change would allow it to return to it’s original state.

Water to ice or steam is an example of a physical change. Electrolysis is an example of a chemical change. It requires another chemical change to turn it back to water, although there is no chemical change that will change a cooked egg back into it’s original state!

Because cooking (heating) just about ALWAYS causes a chemical change.

That's one of the things heat does, even when it's NOT about cooking!
