pH is the negative logarithm to the base ten of the hydrogen ion (H+) concentration. A pH of 7 is considered neutral. A pH above 7 is alkaline. The nearer to 14 the pH is, the stronger the alkali. A solution with a pH of 11 is therefore a mid-strength alkali.

It is safe, unless the pH is very high (let's say above 10), but such a solution wouldn't be called “alkaline water", but simply base.

pH is a measure of the presence of Hydrogen ions present within a solution. The more H+ ions, the more acidic the system. The opposite being OH- ions, this is what gives water its ability to conduct electricity, is through the presence of these ions. This equation is known as the dissociation of water ?^+ + ??^− → ?2?

If water is at pH 11, then there must be a base being dissolved within the water, providing a surplus of OH- ions. For example NaOH. When this dissolves it produces both Na+ ions and OH- ions, resulting in an increase in alkalinity. The strength of the alkalinity is dependent on the type and concentration of base being added to the neutral water.

Another more complex parameter to consider is the pKa and Ka values. These are the dissociation constants or acid dissociation constants. These will indicate how strong the acid or alkali solution is based on the ratio of H+ and OH- ions.

Water itself or an acid

Adding neutral water (pH7) to the alkaline water dilutes the alkali, thereby reducing the pH level. However, this will not give you a pH of 7.0 or below.

Household acids like citric acid from lemons, acetic acid from vinegar and malic acid from apples, can all lower the pH of alkaline water.

Be safe with acids and alkalies though

Not only is there no benefit, as Malcolm Sargeant has stated. If you somehow manage to overwhelm the acid-base homeostatic mechanisms and increase your “overall alkalinity” by more than about 0.1 pH unit, you will die.

Sham. Scam. Con. Take your pick. But “beneficial” is not among the multiple-choice responses.

No, it is useless, when you drink water it is sent to your stomach which has a pH of less than2, so whatever the pH of your water, it is irrelevant. People who want you to believe this BS usually have a stupid machine to sell you.

Get tap water, add soda ash (sodium carbonate) until required pH is reached. We add sodium carbonate to water to improve it for borehole drilling. Doesn't take much to increase the pH.

Q: “What happens if you drink too much alkaline water?

You probably will need to pee.

Our well water is pH 8.2. We have been drinking it for the last 21 years. I am 76. I will tell you what happened (if anything) in another 20 years or so.
