Why is sulphur hexafluoride used in electrical transformers?
Sulphur hexafluoride is an inert gas that has a higher dielectric strength than both nitrogen and oxygen. By using SF6 you can make high voltage switch gear and substations much more compact compared to air insulated electrical gear. By placing the gear in pressurized vessels you also prevent equipment deterioration due to contamination with dust and other environmental pollutants that may reduce the effective isolation distances.
Chemically SF6 usually reforms SF6 if ionized and even if arcing occurs in circuit breakers the gas doesn’t form aggressive compounds that may cause further oxidization or chemical damage to contact surfaces of circuit breakers such as ozone.
