Bond energy, also called the mean bond enthalpy or average bond enthalpy is the measure of bond strength in a chemical bond. It defines the amount of energy needed to break a bond between a covalently bound gas. It is the bond between two atoms that has energy, not single atom.

To calculate the bond energy of a reaction, determine the total number of bonds broken and then subtract the total number of bonds formed. It means,

ΔH = ∑H (bonds broken) – ∑H (bonds formed)

Here, ΔH is the change in bond energy, or bond enthalpy and ∑H is the sum of the bond energies for each side of the equation.

The O-H bond in water is a covalent bond with a higher bond energy than the hydrogen bond. The bond energy of the covalent O-H bonds in water (H2O) is 458.9 kJ/mol.
