Can a psychiatrist prescribe medication?

Carl Miller  Follow

Yes.A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who is skilled, trained and authorized to prescribe medications to manage mental illness. A psychologist is not authorized to prescribe medications to patients and is trained to offer therapy and advice for the management of mental health conditions. In many cases ,a team consisting of a psychiatrist, psychologist, mental health worker and a psychiatric nurse are involved as a group in a hospital setting, depending on the type and severity of the illness being treated. If the patient's case is mild, he is treated in the outpatient department. Only difficult to manage cases are treated on an in-patient basis.
