What people are not acknowledging is that nitrous oxide is a very good oxidant. When you put more oxygen into an engine, then you can burn more fuel. Mechanical supercharging or turbocharging does this, but also increases compression ratios, making detonation knocking in petrol engines a possible nightmare. Also extra heat from more fuel burnt over a prolonged period is very detrimental. Nitrous is easily compressed into a liquid, unlike oxygen. Injecting liquid nitrous oxide has a twofold benefit. It instantly turns into a gas, thus absorbing heat, so the density of the colder fuel and air charge entering the combustion chamber is increased. The major benefit is that compression is not increased, so there is no increased risk of detonation knocking. Also the extra oxygen released from the molecule is when the temperature is highly elevated. ie during the combustion.

Injecting pure oxygen could cause any hot reactive surfaces to immediately combust. Liquid oxygen especially would cause hot carbon spots to instantly burn, risking melting and burning the piston and rings. Superchargers rob enormous amounts of horsepower, nitrous does not.

The injection of nitrous oxide in short controlled bursts can give huge bursts of power. However this can dangerously overheat the engine, so is not something that can be run continuously. Usually it is only used for bursts of acceleration, and then normal engine processes keep the speed going.

Yes you can. Nitromethane is used as a fuel additive in various motorsports such as Top Fuel drag racing where you need bursts of energy for short periods and where performance is the main criteria and the engine is rebuilt after every competition, Not really practical for normal road use where high performance cars already produce more power than the average driver can, safely, handle.

Most drivers expect their engines to last longer the length of the drag strip.
