Frequently Asked Questions
Lipids are a diverse group of hydrophobic or amphiphilic molecules that include fats, oils, waxes, phospholipids, and steroids. They play critical roles in biological systems, such as forming cellular membranes (phospholipids), storing energy (triglycerides), and acting as signaling molecules (steroid hormones). Their structural and functional versatility makes them essential for cell integrity, metabolism, and regulation.
In pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries, commonly used lipids include phospholipids (e.g., phosphatidylcholine for liposomal drug delivery), omega-3 fatty acids (e.g., EPA and DHA for cardiovascular and cognitive health), cholesterol (as a membrane stabilizer in formulations), and medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) for rapid energy sources. These lipids enhance bioavailability, stability, and targeted delivery of active ingredients.
Selecting high-quality lipid raw materials requires attention to purity, source, and documentation. Look for suppliers that provide certificates of analysis (CoA), comply with regulatory standards (e.g., USP, EP, or FCC), and use traceable, sustainable sourcing (e.g., non-GMO, marine or plant-based origins). For sensitive applications like parenteral formulations, ensure lipids meet endotoxin and peroxide value specifications to guarantee safety and performance.
Lipids are prone to oxidation and degradation when exposed to light, heat, or oxygen. Store them in airtight, light-resistant containers under inert gas (e.g., nitrogen) at recommended temperatures—often 2–8°C for unsaturated fatty acids or –20°C for long-term stability. Always follow manufacturer guidelines and monitor peroxide values and acid numbers periodically to ensure quality during storage.
The choice between synthetic and natural lipids depends on the application. Synthetic lipids offer higher batch-to-batch consistency, defined chemical structures, and reduced risk of contaminants—ideal for regulated pharmaceutical products like mRNA vaccines. Natural lipids may be preferred in nutraceuticals or cost-sensitive applications but can vary in composition. Both types must meet quality and safety standards for their intended use.
