Shell to Participate in Qatar's Next LNG Expansion

ECHEMI 2022-10-26

Qatar State owned Oil and Gas Company (QatarEnergy) selected Shell as its second international partner in the expansion project of LNG in the North Oil and Gas Field (NFS). Previously, Total Energy became the first international partner in the project.

According to the cooperation agreement, Shell will obtain 9.375% of the participating interests in the 16 million ton (Mtpa) project every year, of which 25% can be used by international partners, while Qatar National Oil and Gas Company will hold the remaining 75%.

State Minister of Energy Affairs of Qatar Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, President and CEO of Qatar State owned Oil and Gas Company, said: "Qatar will provide new liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the market. In the context of recent geopolitical turmoil, natural gas has become more important in meeting the urgent need for cleaner energy to meet global environmental goals. Given that the world is increasingly concerned not only about energy security, but also about practical energy transformation and fair and equitable access to clean energy, these quantities are welcome."

This is the second time QatarEnergy has announced the NFS partnership, and the third partner will be announced in due course.

Earlier this year, Shell joined the expansion of North East Oilfield (NFE) as a 25% shareholder of a joint venture. NFE has invested USD 28.75 billion and is planned to be put into production by the end of 2025.
