Nitrogen also plays a protective role. One of the body’s key antioxidants, glutathione, is built with nitrogen and safeguards cells from damage caused by stress, pollution, and normal metabolism. It acts like a cellular shield, helping maintain long-term health.

 

Another behind-the-scenes task supported by nitrogen is waste removal. When the body breaks down protein, it creates ammonia, which is harmful if it accumulates. Through the urea cycle, the body converts this into urea—a safer compound that can be filtered out. This process helps keep the internal environment balanced and prevents shifts in blood pH that could disrupt cell function.

 

A Quick Look at Nitrogen as an Element

Outside the body, nitrogen is known by the symbol N and sits at number 7 on the periodic table. In everyday life, it exists mostly as N₂, a very stable form that doesn’t react much—hence why we breathe it in and out without noticing. Only at extremely low temperatures does nitrogen become a liquid, boiling at about –196°C.

Even though the nitrogen we inhale isn’t used directly, the forms of nitrogen the body transforms and absorbs are vital. They support protein and DNA formation, influence brain chemistry, protect cells, and help remove waste.
