How Nitrogen Is Used in the Human Body and Its Key Properties
Most people hear early on that nitrogen makes up most of the air around us, but the form we breathe in doesn’t play an active role in the body. The nitrogen that truly matters only becomes useful after it has been built into more complex molecules. Once that happens, this quiet element becomes essential for growth, energy, and day-to-day functioning.
How the Body Puts Nitrogen to Work
One of nitrogen’s most important jobs is helping the body make amino acids. These are the building blocks of protein, and protein is behind almost everything the body does—from repairing muscles and skin to producing enzymes and hormones. Whenever tissue is healing or growing, nitrogen-based compounds are in the background making it possible.
Nitrogen also holds a central place in our genetic code. DNA and RNA both rely on nitrogen in their structure. Because cells are constantly dividing and renewing themselves, the body depends on nitrogen to copy and pass along genetic instructions accurately. Without it, the process of cell repair and growth would fall apart very quickly.
The brain depends on nitrogen too, although in a more subtle way. Several neurotransmitters that influence mood, focus, and motivation come from nitrogen-containing amino acids. Serotonin, often linked to emotional balance, and dopamine, associated with drive and reward, both trace back to nitrogen chemistry. When nitrogen-based nutrients are lacking, changes in mood or mental clarity can follow.
Nitrogen also plays a protective role. One of the body’s key antioxidants, glutathione, is built with nitrogen and safeguards cells from damage caused by stress, pollution, and normal metabolism. It acts like a cellular shield, helping maintain long-term health.
Another behind-the-scenes task supported by nitrogen is waste removal. When the body breaks down protein, it creates ammonia, which is harmful if it accumulates. Through the urea cycle, the body converts this into urea—a safer compound that can be filtered out. This process helps keep the internal environment balanced and prevents shifts in blood pH that could disrupt cell function.
A Quick Look at Nitrogen as an Element
Outside the body, nitrogen is known by the symbol N and sits at number 7 on the periodic table. In everyday life, it exists mostly as N₂, a very stable form that doesn’t react much—hence why we breathe it in and out without noticing. Only at extremely low temperatures does nitrogen become a liquid, boiling at about –196°C.

Even though the nitrogen we inhale isn’t used directly, the forms of nitrogen the body transforms and absorbs are vital. They support protein and DNA formation, influence brain chemistry, protect cells, and help remove waste.
