AstraZeneca: The Powerhouse in Lung Cancer Treatment

ECHEMI 2024-03-01

AstraZeneca, a leading pharmaceutical company, has emerged as a dominant player in the field of lung cancer treatment. With a comprehensive portfolio of immunotherapies, targeted therapies, and ADCs (Enhertu), AstraZeneca aims to cover more than half of all lung cancer patients by 2023, positioning itself as a global leader in lung cancer therapeutics.

In its annual performance report released on February 8, 2024, AstraZeneca outlined its ambitious goal to provide treatment options for over 50% of lung cancer patients by 2023. The company stands as the only pharmaceutical company to commercialize three types of drugs for lung cancer treatment: immunotherapies, targeted therapies, and ADCs. Notably, Tagrisso (osimertinib), a targeted therapy, achieved impressive global sales of $5.799 billion in 2023, with a year-on-year growth rate of 7%. With the inclusion of osimertinib for adjuvant therapy in the national healthcare system, the market is expected to expand further. AstraZeneca's PD(L)-1 inhibitor, Imfinzi (durvalumab), also demonstrated remarkable results, generating global sales of $4.237 billion in 2023, with a significant growth rate of 52%. This growth can be attributed to the approval of Imfinzi for the maintenance treatment of inoperable stage III lung cancer and its breakthrough in small cell lung cancer indications. Additionally, AstraZeneca's ADC drug, Enhertu, became the first approved ADC therapy for lung cancer, with global sales reaching $2.566 billion in 2023.

On February 19, 2024, AstraZeneca made several significant announcements relating to lung cancer treatment. First, the combination of osimertinib and chemotherapy received FDA approval for the first-line treatment of EGFR-mutated NSCLC (FLAURA2). Second, the LAURA trial, evaluating the efficacy of osimertinib in maintaining the treatment response in inoperable stage III EGFR-mutated lung cancer following chemoradiotherapy, achieved its primary endpoint. Lastly, the FDA accepted the Biologics License Application (BLA) for Dato-dad, with a Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) date set for December 20, 2024. Dato-dad is intended for the treatment of previously treated non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer. The FLAURA2 trial, similar to AstraZeneca's FLAURA trial, demonstrated positive results for the safety and efficacy of osimertinib in combination with pemetrexed and platinum-based chemotherapy for the first-line treatment of locally advanced or metastatic EGFR-mutated NSCLC. The trial showed a significant extension in median progression-free survival (mPFS) and a 38% reduction in the risk of disease progression or death. The LAURA trial, which focused on the maintenance treatment of inoperable stage III EGFR-mutated NSCLC following chemoradiotherapy, also achieved positive results, further solidifying AstraZeneca's position in the lung cancer treatment market.

AstraZeneca has established itself as a powerhouse in lung cancer treatment, with an impressive portfolio of drugs covering immunotherapies, targeted therapies, and ADCs. The company's commitment to expanding treatment options for lung cancer patients is evident in its goal to cover more than half of all lung cancer patients by 2023. With drugs like Tagrisso, Imfinzi, and Enhertu achieving significant sales figures and promising clinical trial results, AstraZeneca is poised to lead the global lung cancer therapeutics market.
