Mitsubishi Chemical Group's plant-based polyurethane BioPTMG is now used in biosynthetic leather bags

ECHEMI 2024-10-30

Mitsubishi Chemical Group (MCG Group) announced that its plant-derived polyol "BioPTMG" has been adopted by Kahei Co. as a synthetic leather (biosynthetic leather) material. In addition, "tonto", operated by Triple A Co., Ltd., a planner and marketer of sustainable products, will sell small items made from this biosynthetic leather.

Biosynthetic leather is synthetic leather made using plant-derived raw materials, and is synthetic leather made from materials other than synthetic leather materials made from non-animal-derived materials.

BioPTMG is a plant-derived polyol developed by the MCG Group in 2021 that gives polyurethane and polyester products flexibility, durability, and high elasticity. Thanks to a unique refining technology, the material does not color when made into resin, and can be used in a wide range of fields from interior design and fashion to industrial materials like petroleum-derived products. In addition, its biomass content is as high as over 92%, which not only reduces the consumption of petroleum, a depleting resource, but also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions because the raw material plants absorb carbon dioxide during growth.

Synthetic leather manufacturer Kahei Co., Ltd. selects high-quality synthetic leather waste from the manufacturing process and effectively utilizes it in products sold under the small goods brand "tonto." The company is also committed to reducing CO2 emissions, and its sustainability strategy matched the characteristics of BioPTMG, so it ultimately adopted BioPTMG.
