What chemicals are used in water treatment is questions that is asked by many individuals. These chemicals are really helpful because they can eliminate the bad tastes, odors and make the water safe to drink. Some of these chemicals include chlorine, bromine, ozone and more. But not all treatments just simply use chemicals. They also use other methods like filtration and UV light as well.
Chemicals used in water treatment
1. Chlorine
It is the most common disinfectant used by municipal water treatment plants. It will help by killing bacteria and other microorganisms that might be living on water. Chlorine can also remove harmful metals like copper, uranium, and lead from the groundwater supply. Chlorine is colorless, strong smelling and toxic at high concentrations. When it is added with water, it creates poisonous gas called chlorine dioxide which destroys any dangerous microorganism in water. The good thing about chlorine is that it kills most of the harmful microorganisms in water but leaves other useful minerals intact.
2. Bromine
It is less toxic than chlorine but it will still protect water from bacteria and other microorganisms. Bromine can kill many dangerous viruses, bacteria and other harmful organisms that causes disease. Bromine can also destroy the organic matter in water like any dead plankton in the water. Bromine is colorless, known as a bromide; it is also very strong smelling. It's used to disinfect swimming pools' pool water. The reason why bromine has become less widely used than chlorine is because of its health hazards to the public if they drink it directly or touch the skin after swimming in a pool where brominated residuals are present. Bromine is an odorless gas, it is also toxic at high concentrations.
3. Chloramines
They are the combination of chlorine and ammonia. Chloramines will kill some microorganisms that are difficult to see but are not deadly to humans. Chloramines also work by killing of harmful pathogens like bacteria, viruses and fungal. Although they work by killing bacteria and viruses, they can leave behind other microbes that could cause disease. Chloramine is a sodium salt of hypochlorous acid which can be as strong as chlorine but with its own advantages such as won't harm people who touch it or inhale the gas (if you add small amount to the water in your shower). Since we always have high demand for drinking water, it will be sad if they cannot get enough water from their sources. Like experts said that when our cities have severe drought and have low rainfall, they must draw of their groundwater supply. It is because they need to take a long time to recharge this underground reservoir by collecting rainwater when there is severe drought or reduced rainfall.
