South Korea detects radioactive substances from imported mascara

ECHEMI 2020-01-17

The sale and recovery measures have been interrupted. The food and drug administration has stepped up the monitoring of imported cosmetics. It has detected traces of thorium, uranium and other radioactive substances from 10 cosmetics, such as imported mascara and eyeliner, and has taken measures to interrupt sales and recovery.  South Korea food and drug safety department said that (Itvex) International imported and sold mascara and other 10 cosmetics detected radioactive substances thorium (Th-232) and uranium (U-238) and other banned raw materials, then take the measures to interrupt sales and recall related products. The measure is that the customs office inspected and recycled products that had ever exceeded the surface radiation at the stage of import customs clearance. The results showed that there were 7 kinds of mascara and 3 kinds of eyeliner to detect radioactive substances. According to the results of the investigation, the prohibited raw materials (radioactive substances) of cosmetics and the recovery measures were adopted. However, compared with the annual radiation dose safety standard (1msv / y) stipulated in the law on the safety management of radiation around the life, it is very low. &In the future, the food and drug safety department, together with the customs office and the atomic energy safety committee, will strengthen the monitoring of the customs clearance stage of imported cosmetics, take measures to stop sales, centralized recovery and inspection when detecting radioactive substances, and require importers to strengthen the inspection of radioactive substances in the products and find out the causes.
