How to make acetic acid

 

Step 1: Put the two chemicals acetate and hydrogren in a metal container and heat them. The reaction that takes place is called "esterification". The molecules of acetic acid react with alcohol molecules, converting into new molecules called esters. The alcohol molecules are turned into water, carbon dioxide, and ethanol byproduct.

Zinc dust will react with hydrochloric acid in the solution and turns it into white fumes that are removed from the solution by letting it go through a filter of soil. These fumes turn back into liquid when it gets in contact with air. The end product is a pure solution of acetic acid.

The finished product will have a pH level of about 3.4 to about 3.7. This solution can be used for pickling and preserving food as an alternative to vinegar (pH level 4.6).

 

Uses of acetic acid

1. Acidic Solution: Acetic acid is used as a pH indicator. As a small amount of acetic acid is added to a liquid, the indicator will turn pink indicating that the solution has a pH level of about 3.4 or higher. In contrast, the solution with an acidity level above 4.5 will turn very dark in color indicating high acidity levels in the solution. This property can be used to determine if something is acidic or not and also to tell how acidic something is.

 

2. Recycling: Acetic acid can be recycled by placing it in sunlight for several hours and then filtering it through clean water to remove any dissolved solids from it. Acetic acid will continue to be useful and can be used again without any loss or deterioration in quality.

 

3. Disinfectant: Acetic acid is used to disinfect water and can be used in some countries around the world

 

Disadvantages

 

Production of acetic acid by esterification requires alcohol which is not very environment friendly because it contains a high amount of water that pollutes the water system. Also the production of acetic acid requires large quantities of energy which pollutes the atmosphere even more.

Public health

 

Acetic acid should not be used directly on the skin because it can cause skin irritation, though it can be added to products that are used on the skin. For example, it can be added to bath oils and body lotions. Acetic acid should not come into contact with waste water or sewers because its low pH level will eventually turn the water acidic, which harms animals and plants.

If acetic acid is mixed with other substances (such as chlorine), toxic fumes will bubble out of them. Acetic acid is also corrosive to materials like cement and iron.

 

Acetic acid is dangerous to humans because it can cause irritation on the eyes and skin as well as respiratory failure. Acetic acid can even be fatal if inhaled.
