Calyceal diverticulum
The calyceal diverticula are cysts in the renal parenchyma that are lined with transitional epithelial cells and communicate with the renal pelvis or calyces through narrow channels. The diverticula have no secretory function, but urine can flow back into the diverticula. The disease was first described by Rayer in 1841. It can be multiple and located in any part of the kidney, but the upper calyces are more likely to be affected.
