Acute radiation sickness is a systemic disease caused by exposure to a large dose (>1Gy) of ionizing radiation in a short period of time. Acute radiation sickness can occur from both external and internal radiation, but external radiation is the main cause. The radiation that causes acute radiation sickness from external radiation includes gamma rays, neutrons, and X-rays.
