Systemic candidiasis
Systemic candidiasis is an invasive infection caused by Candida species, mainly Candida albicans. It manifests as fungemia, endocarditis, meningitis, and focal lesions of the liver, spleen, kidney, bone, skin and subcutaneous tissue, or other tissues. In the 1980s, the incidence of nosocomial candidiasis increased at least 5-fold, making it one of the most common hospital-acquired infections. It may be associated with an excess mortality of ≥ 40% and prolonged hospital stays for patients with non-primary candidiasis.
