Tumors originating from paraganglia are all APUD system tumors, which are divided into two categories: biologically active tumors and biologically inactive tumors. The biologically inactive tumors are non-pheochromocytoma (also called chemoreceptor tumors), and the biologically active ones are pheochromocytoma, both of which can become malignant.
