Physiological jaundice of newborn
Neonatal physiological jaundice is caused by the characteristics of neonatal bilirubin metabolism. It is when the serum bilirubin of the newborn gradually rises from 17 to 51 μmol/L (1 to 3 mg/dl) at birth to 86 μmol/L (5 mg/dl) or above 24 hours after birth, clinical jaundice appears without other symptoms and disappears within 1 to 2 weeks. When the serum bilirubin of adults is >34μmol/L (2mg/dl), yellowing of the sclera and skin can be seen. Because of the rich capillaries of newborns, yellowing of the skin only occurs when the bilirubin is >85μmol/L (5mg/dl).
