Odontoid fracture
Odontoid fractures are not uncommon, accounting for 10% to 15% of cervical fracture-dislocations in adults. Unfortunately, there are still reports of odontoid fractures being missed at the first visit. Any patient with persistent neck pain and stiffness after trauma, with or without symptoms of nerve compression, should be given repeated X-rays, including CT scans, to avoid missing possible odontoid fractures.
