The periosteum is a dense connective tissue membrane that covers the surface of the bone (except the articular surface) and contains abundant blood vessels, nerves and osteoblasts. The periosteum plays an important role in bone growth and regeneration. Periostitis is a stress-induced periosteum injury caused by dilation, congestion, edema or subperiosteal hemorrhage, hematoma-organized periosteal hyperplasia and inflammatory changes of the periosteum or an infectious periosteum injury caused by purulent bacterial invasion.
