Febrile convulsion (FC) is the most common convulsive disease in infants and young children. It is defined as convulsive seizures accompanied by fever that occur in infancy and young children, excluding central nervous system infections and a history of febrile convulsions. It is currently believed that children with simple FC should not be diagnosed with epilepsy. Febrile convulsions are not a simple addition of "fever" and "convulsions". The definition proposed by Nelson and Ellenberg in 1981 is that febrile convulsions refer to: onset in infancy and young children, often between 3 months and 5 years old, accompanied by fever but not caused by intracranial infection, and convulsions without other clear causes. If there has been a febrile convulsion before the attack, this attack is not considered a febrile convulsion. The definition proposed in the book "Pediatric Neurological Diseases" (edited by Zuo Qihua): The first attack occurs between 1 month and 5-6 years old, in the early stage of upper respiratory tract infection or other infectious diseases, when the body temperature is above 38°C, and convulsions suddenly occur. It can only be diagnosed as febrile convulsion after excluding intracranial infection and other organic or metabolic abnormalities that cause convulsions.
