Aspiration pneumonia in the elderly
Aspiration pneumonia mainly refers to the inhalation of secretions from the mouth, nose and pharynx and reflux from the stomach and esophagus into the lower respiratory tract, reaching the alveoli and terminal respiratory tract, and causing pulmonary inflammatory lesions. Inhalation is the most common way for pathogens to enter the lower respiratory tract, so aspiration pneumonia accounts for a large proportion of pneumonia in the elderly.
