Tropical spastic paraparesis
Tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP) is a neurological endemic disease prevalent in many tropical and subtropical countries. It is an inflammation of the spinal cord caused by chronic infection with human T-lymphocytic virus type 1 (HTLV-1). HTLV-1 associated myelopathy (HAM) originally found in southern Japan is also this disease. It has an insidious onset and slowly progresses, with spastic paraplegia as the main clinical manifestation. Anti-HTLV-1 antibodies are positive in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid. Glucocorticoid treatment has a certain effect.
