Ischemic colitis in the elderly
Ischemic colitis in the elderly is caused by intestinal damage due to obstructive diseases of the arteries or their branches that control the colon, which reduces or eliminates blood supply to the local intestinal wall. Ischemic colitis is usually spontaneous, with no specific symptoms or signs. Its clinical manifestations vary depending on its severity, the extent of involvement, the speed of ischemic damage, and the tolerance of the intestinal wall to hypoxia. It is common to see elderly patients over 60 years old who have no history of colon disease suddenly develop acute abdominal symptoms.
