Traumatic asphyxia
Traumatic asphyxia is caused by severe chest compression, and its incidence rate accounts for about 2% to 8% of chest injuries. In the instant of chest compression, the victim's glottis suddenly closes, and the air in the airway and lungs cannot escape. The pressure in the chest cavity rises suddenly, forcing the venous blood flow back to the upper body, causing the capillaries in the head, shoulders, and upper chest tissue to rupture, blood to overflow, and cause punctate bleeding. Patients are often accompanied by other chest injuries: such as multiple rib fractures, pneumothorax, hemothorax, or heart contusion.
