Chronic lingual tonsillitis
Chronic lingual tonsilitis, or hypertrophy of the lingual tonsils, is often caused by repeated attacks of acute lingual tonsillitis. It is often related to chronic inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, excessive smoking and drinking, eating spicy food, and stimulation by harmful gases. It often coexists with chronic tonsillitis. After tonsillectomy, compensatory hypertrophy of the lingual tonsils may also occur. This disease mostly occurs in adults and is rare in children.
