Acute superior mesenteric artery infarction
Acute obstruction of the superior mesenteric artery is often caused by the detachment of cardiogenic emboli that block the artery, or thrombosis secondary to arteriosclerosis that blocks the lumen, ultimately leading to infarction of the corresponding tissues. The severity of the infarction depends on the underlying arterial lesions, the speed and degree of infarction, and collateral circulation.
