Myositis ossificans can be divided into three categories, namely traumatic, localized and progressive. Traumatic myositis ossificans refers to ossification caused by repeated external damage to a certain part of the muscle. Localized myositis usually forms bone in the scar of the muscle. Here we only describe myositis ossificans progressiveiva. This disease is characterized by ectopic calcification and ossification in the muscle; the clinical characteristics are small deformities of fingers (toes) and progressive ossification of connective tissue in the gap between fascia, tendons, ligaments, myometrium and skeletal muscle. Since the skeletal muscle itself is basically normal, it seems more accurate to use the term fibrodysplasia ossificans progressive to describe this disease.
