Tension pneumothorax
The wound on the chest wall, lung, bronchi or esophagus is in the form of a one-way valve, communicating with the pleural cavity. During inhalation, the valve opens and air enters the pleural cavity. During exhalation, the valve closes and air cannot be discharged from the pleural cavity. Therefore, with breathing, the pressure in the pleural cavity on the injured side continues to increase, exceeding the atmospheric pressure, forming a tension pneumothorax, also known as pressure pneumothorax or valve pneumothorax.
