Escitalopram Oxalate Tablets
Function and Efficacy
Escitalopram enhances the effects of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in the central nervous system and inhibits the reuptake of 5-hydroxytryptamine. It is clinically used to treat depression. Animal studies have shown that escitalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), but has a weak effect on the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine, which is 100 times that of the dextrorotatory enantiomer of citalopram. Escitalopram has no or very little effect on 5-hydroxytryptamine 1-7 receptors or other receptors including α and β adrenaline, dopamine 1-5, histamine 1, muscarinic 1-5 and benzodiazepine receptors. In addition, it has no effect on Na, K, Cl- and Ca ion channels.
