Irbesartan and Hydrochlorothiazide Tablets
Function and Efficacy
Hydrochlorothiazide in irbesartan-hydrochlorothiazide combination preparations can cause activation of the sympathetic nervous system and the renin-angiotensin system, counteract the antihypertensive effect, and reduce blood potassium levels. Irbesartan can counteract the compensatory mechanism induced by diuretics, thereby enhancing the antihypertensive effect of diuretics, and can also selectively block AT1 subtype receptors to exert antihypertensive effects. In addition, irbesartan can attenuate the increase in serum uric acid and decrease in blood potassium induced by hydrochlorothiazide. Irbesartan-hydrochlorothiazide (r) can effectively lower blood pressure in patients with mild, moderate or severe hypertension, and the degree of reduction is comparable to that of ACEI, β-blockers and calcium antagonists used alone or in combination with hydrochlorothiazide. The increased efficacy of irbesartan and hydrochlorothiazide compared with monotherapy is very important for achieving the target blood pressure of treatment guidelines (JNC7 and WHO/ISH). In addition, the tolerability of long-term use of irbesartan-hydrochlorothiazide (r) and the simple medication method of one tablet per day may help patients adhere to treatment. Therefore, irbesartan-hydrochlorothiazide (r) is a reasonable choice for patients who must take combination medications to lower their blood pressure.
