Levamisole Hydrochloride Pagoda Sugar

Function and Efficacy

This product is the levorotatory form of tetramisole, which can selectively inhibit succinate dehydrogenase in the muscles of the worm, so that fumaric acid cannot be reduced to succinic acid, thereby affecting the anaerobic metabolism of the muscles of the worm and reducing energy production. When the worm comes into contact with it, it can depolarize the nerves and muscles, and the muscles will continue to contract and cause paralysis; the drug's cholinergic effect is conducive to the excretion of the worm. Its activity is about 1 to 2 times that of tetramisole (racemic form), but its toxic side effects are lower. In addition, the drug may have an inhibitory effect on the microtubule structure of the worm. Levamisole also has immune regulation and immune excitation functions.

It is more active than ethopropazine against adult worms and microfilariae of Bancroftian filariasis, Malayan Brugia and Onchocerca volvulus, but the long-term efficacy is poor.

Usage and Dosage

1. Ascaris: Oral, 1.5~2.5mg/kg for adults on an empty stomach or before bedtime, 2~3mg for children 2. Hookworm: Oral, 1.5~2.5mg/kg, once a night, for 3 consecutive days. 3. Treatment of filariasis: 4~6mg/kg, divided into 2~3 doses, for 3 consecutive days.

Some may have granulocytopenia and thrombocytopenia. A few may even have agranulocytosis (often reversible), which often occurs in patients with rheumatism or tumors. In addition, it can cause immediate and Arthus allergic reactions, which may be atopic reactions caused by stimulating T cells. Individual cases may experience ataxia, paresthesia, or blurred vision.
