Barium sulfate: also known as barite, chemical formula BaSO4, colorless or white rhombic crystal. The relative molecular mass is 233.40. The relative density is 4.5 (15°C). Melting point is 1580℃. Refractive index 1.637. When heated to 1149°C, it becomes a monoclinic crystal. At this time, the refractive index is 1.649. Almost insoluble in water, 0.00022 at 18℃, 0.00041 at 100℃, slightly soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid; soluble in alkali metal carbonate solution, becoming barium carbonate; insoluble in other acids and bases.

In nature, it exists as a barite mineral. The natural mineral is called barite. It is heated to 800°C with carbon (coal powder) and reduced to soluble barium sulfide and carbon monoxide. It has the ability to absorb X-rays strongly, X-rays are not transparent, and it can be used as medicine (barium meal) for X-ray gastrointestinal. Barium sulfate is the only non-toxic barium salt. Used in analytical reagents, electronics, instrumentation, metallurgy and other industries, used as white pigments, pharmaceuticals taken during gastrointestinal X-ray fluoroscopy, copper smelting fluxes, drilling mud specific gravity increasers, and white fillers for rubber, paper, and plastics. By sulfuric acid and barium chloride reaction. Barium sulfate (Type I): white loose powder, odorless and tasteless. Barium sulfate (type II): refined from barium sulfate of the barite family of sulfate minerals, calculated as dry product, containing not less than 97% barium sulfate, a white loose powder, odorless and tasteless. Barium sulfate (Type I and Type II) is insoluble in water, organic solvents, acids or sodium hydroxide, and contains 58.84% barium.
