Meropenem is another semisynthetic carbapenem antibiotic administered parenterally after imipenem cistatin was marketed in the United States. It inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls by covalently binding to the penicillin binding protein (PBPs) involved in cell wall synthesis, thus playing an antibacterial role. It is sensitive to both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, especially gram-negative bacteria. For example, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for about 90% of enterobacterium was 0.08-0.15mg/L, and more than 90% of pseudomonas aeruginosa strains were highly sensitive to them (MIC < 4mg/L), and all haemophilus including ampicillin resistant strains were highly sensitive to them (MIC 0.06-1mg/L). Neisseria gonorrhoeae was also highly sensitive to meropenem and its activity was 15 times stronger than imipenem. Staphylococcus epidermidis, staphylococcus saprophytococcus and other coagulase negative staphylococcus are sensitive to meropenem, and most strains of enterococcus faecalis are highly or moderately sensitive to meropenem. Meropenem at a concentration of 0.06 -- 4mg/L inhibited almost all bacteroides fragilis. Anaerobic bacteria such as streptococcus digestion, propionibacterium, actinomyces and so on are also sensitive to meropenem.
